Portuguese Antique Metal container for Olive Oil
About the Item
Metal container traditionally used to store and transport olive oil or other liquids. Cylindrical in shape, with a robust body and a tapered top that leads to a narrow mouth, closed with a metal cap.
It has two side handles for easy handling and transport. Its surface has been painted a vibrant orange, although it shows signs of wear and small paint chips, revealing the underlying metal.
Almudes were widely used in wine cellars and olive oil warehouses, being a practical solution for preserving the product. Over time, they were replaced by other materials such as glass and plastic. The almude is a unit of measurement of capacity for liquids, especially for wine, which varied from region to region. It derives from the Arabic al-mudd and appears in Portuguese documentation since the first half of the 11th century.
