About the Item
Auguste Mouzin et Cie, Belgium, designed and manufactured this lovely Art Deco bedroom or dresser ceramic faience set. The set comprised four pieces: a pitcher, a large basin bowl, a soap-lidded dish, and a comb-lidded holder box. Those sets were used as toiletry accessories for washing and toiletry needs. They were displayed in bedrooms when bathrooms were not yet a standard feature in houses. Each piece is beautifully ornate, featuring enamel over off-white glazed ceramic and a stylized floral geometric design, with a lovely combination of apple green, yellow saffron, amethyst purple, and black colors. Each piece is stamped on the underside with the inscription 'AMC - Made in Belgium', along with the model reference number and a handwritten ceramicist monogram.
The set is in good shape for its age, with minor wear throughout on the ceramic pieces due to regular use, including a hairline on the basin, rust stain, and hairline at the collar on the pitcher, and rust stain on the inner edge of the comb box. Check the close-ups.
Measurements:
Basin-bowl: 14 in diameter (35.5 cm) by 4.50 in high (11.5 cm).
Pitcher: 9.88 in wide (25 cm) by 7.07 in deep (18 cm) by 11 in high (28 cm).
Soap dish: 5.94 in wide (15 cm) x 4.32 in deep (11 cm) x 3.13 in high (8 cm).
Comb holder box: 9.44 in wide (24 cm) by 3.75 in deep (9.5 cm) by 3.57 in high (9 cm).
Note: Measurements in the item detail are for the basin bowl only.
Note:
Originally named Auguste Mouzin et Cie in Wasmuël, Belgium, the faience factory AMC was later known as "la Faiencerie de Wasmuël" and was active from 1878 to 1951. It produced mainly large ornamental pieces and fine-quality decorative items in ceramic. This factory was renowned for its Art Deco ceramics, characterized by recognizable geometric motifs. Vases, bathroom sets, and decorative items were among the factory's regular production. Around 1910, the factory started massive production of mantel clocks. More than a hundred different models were produced, each featuring numerous original decorations.
