About the Item

A large and decorative pair of Meissen porcelain vases, of ancient Roman krater form, with handles shaped as entwined serpents. Highly ornamental, these vases represent an interesting combination of the restrained, classical form, and the exuberant decoration with rich cobalt-blue and gold. Perfect for lamp conversion. Marked with crossed swords in underglaze blue and Pressnummer A 148 The motif of entwined serpents was considered appropriate for a funerary urn. Linked with the earth, snakes were associated with chthonian powers, and the Greeks and Romans regarded them as guardians of sacred places, houses, and tombs. A marble urn with similar serpent handles is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. This item is now on view at the Berkshire galleries of Great Barrington Massachusetts.
