19th Century Chinese Export Lacquered Tea Canister in Red and Gilt, “No.17”

About the Item

This beautifully preserved 19th-century Chinese export tea canister, hand-painted in rich red lacquer with gilt floral and calligraphic detailing, is a classic example of 19th-century chinoiserie and global trade aesthetic. This cylindrical storage vessel, originally used to store loose-leaf tea in an apothecary or tea merchant’s shop, is adorned with stylized Chinese characters and the number “17” prominently displayed on the front, suggesting that it’s likely part of a larger collection. Crafted from tin and finished in a high-contrast lacquer palette, this piece showcases delicate brushwork along the top and bottom bands—featuring scrolling foliage and traditional botanical motifs. The domed lid fits snugly and retains its original form, contributing to the object’s strong sculptural presence.
