Antique Chinese Pottery 【Luzon Jar】/Iron-glazed teapot/15th to 18th centuries

About the Item

This is an antique ceramic jar, commonly known as a “Luzon Jar,” made sometime between the 15th and 18th centuries. It is believed to have been produced in southern China and then used throughout Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines, before eventually being imported to Japan. In Japan, jars of this type—brought through Luzon Island in the Philippines—came to be known as “Luzon Jars” and have long been appreciated by tea masters and collectors. A reference photo from an art book is included for your viewing. This jar was originally used to store tea and features four small, semi-circular lugs around the rim for securing a cord. It comes with a wooden lid, over which a cloth has been draped. Over time, this cloth has acquired a beautiful patina, evoking a sense of wabi-sabi—the quiet elegance found in imperfection and age. The jar is finished with a rich, subdued iron glaze, and faint traces of soot on the surface further enhance its depth and gravitas. The elegant curvature from the mouth to the base adds a refined tension to the form, making this a high-quality example among Luzon jars. On the front of the jar, a later Japanese owner inscribed the phrase “Chiyo no Kotobuki” (“A thousand generations of happiness”) in gold. This auspicious phrase expresses a wish for long-lasting good fortune and blends harmoniously with the overall aesthetic, uniting Eastern craftsmanship with Japanese sensibility. The condition is excellent, with no noticeable cracks or chips. However, the cloth is very old and delicate, so please handle it with care. You may choose to display the jar with the cloth in place, preserving its quiet, traditional presence, or remove it to emphasize the graceful lines of the jar itself. Whether placed in an entryway, a Japanese-style alcove (tokonoma), or even a calm Western interior, this jar brings a serene, timeworn presence that adds depth and atmosphere to any space. If you wish to display flowers or branches, we recommend placing a separate container inside rather than pouring water directly into the jar. We invite you to experience the quiet beauty and history of this piece, passed down through centuries of Eastern tradition. Weight: 5.55kg
