About the Item

A Bronze Falcon Headed Canopic Jar, Early 20th Century Description: The bronze jar with a lid modelled as a zoomorphic falcon-head adorned in a nemes, likely emulating both the gods Qebehsenuef and Ra. One of the four sons of Horus, Qehbehsenuef serves as god of the West and the protector of the intestines, and as such is most notably depicted on canopic jars with a falcon head similar to his father. The body encircled by a frieze band depicting various fragments of the Dendera temple zodiac reliefs, including the wedded twin gods Shu and Tefnut holding hands, followed by a procession of various other deities, descending to lower geometric bands, raised atop a fluted socle in a depressed bowl, the everted rim with a band of winged scarabs and sun discs issuing serpents, the whole in brass.
