About the Item
A Greek Black Figure Style Grand Tour Amphora, 19th Century
Provenance: Private Australian Collection.
Description:
Amphora, specifically, were used for storing and transporting liquids like wine and oil. This type of pottery is characterized by figures and decorative motifs painted in black silhouette against the natural reddish-orange color of the clay. The black-figure technique involved painting figures with a slip (a liquid clay mixture) that would turn black during a specific three-stage firing process, while details were incised into the black figures, revealing the underlying clay. Developed in Corinth around 700 BC, it became widely used, especially in Athens, during the 6th and early 5th centuries BCE.
