About the Item
This is a piece of Shigaraki ware pottery fired in Shiga Prefecture. Shigaraki ware is said to have originated in the Shigaraki region of Shiga Prefecture around the 8th century and is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns.
This vase was fired between the mid- and late Muromachi periods, dating to the late 15th century.
At 46.9 cm tall, it would have been considered a large jar for its time.
It features a soft, rounded shape from the shoulders to the center and an expressive clay surface. The beautiful brown gradation unique to Shigaraki ware is evident, making it a work of art created by man and nature.
A vase from the same period has been featured as a reference in an art book, so we've included it here as well.
The texture of the unglazed pottery is rough, like a biscuit, and its dry appearance is cool.
However, the dry surface also exudes a warm charm. Shigaraki ware's rustic appearance has long been immensely popular among enthusiasts of antique pottery.
This vase was used as a teapot and has an old wooden lid. The lid is also exquisitely tasteful and blends perfectly with the vase.
There is a chip at the rim of the vase. There are also signs of a repaired crack on the bottom, but these are not particularly noticeable when viewing the vase and do not interfere with its appearance, so they do not detract from its charm.
From an interior design perspective, this vase also has an outstanding presence. Place it in the alcove of a Japanese-style room or a simple, modern space, and it will add depth and charm to the entire space. Fill it with branches or dried flowers to create an even more sophisticated look. Place it in an entryway or hallway as a special accent to quietly welcome guests. Another attractive feature is its simple shape and lack of unnecessary decoration, allowing it to blend naturally with any interior style.
Furthermore, since it is not glazed, it will leak if water is poured directly into it. When arranging fresh flowers, we recommend filling a separate container with water and placing it in the vase.
Items like this are becoming increasingly rare in Japan.
We believe it is our mission to convey the appeal of these antiques and preserve them.
