About the Item

Late Bronze Age Cypriot Painted Jar ca. 1450 to 1200 BCE An elegant example of Late Bronze Age Cypriot pottery, this jar features a broad, ovoid body tapering upward to a short neck and flared disk rim. A single applied loop handle is positioned between the shoulder and neck—pierced for potential suspension or securing, typical of transport or ritual vessels from that period. Decorative parallel bands encircle the jar’s shoulder and upper body, interspersed with radiating triangular motifs in the Red-on-Buff tradition, characteristic of Cyprus’s Late Bronze Age ceramic style. These painted registers reinforce both aesthetic clarity and cultural context, indicative of vessels used for offerings, oils, or trade. This vessel reflects the sophistication of the Red-on-Buff tradition, is very well-preserved, with natural surface wear and consistent archaeology-grade authenticity.Cypriot pottery of this era reflects the island’s position within vibrant Mediterranean exchange networks. Ceramics like this were part of both local use and wider distribution to Mycenaean Greece and Levantine cultures. The geometric patterns and utilitarian form align with archaeological typologies for trade and ritual use. Cypriot Bichrome Ware highlighted by red and black bands was produced during the Late Cypriot I and II periods and widely exchanged across the Eastern Mediterranean as an indicator of both aesthetic and functional sophistication. Originally from the collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles. Acquired in the U.S. from a California gallery between the late 1990s and 2005, consistent with legal importation practices of the time.
