About the Item

A small pithos (a Greek storage container), this terra cotta jar has well-balanced proportions, with a thin protruding ring just above the widest part of the body. The opening has a lightly rolled rim, adding to the rounded form of the jar. It has a wonderful chalky white finish, with some commensurate losses revealing traces of the original orange hue of the terra cotta, along with areas containing a cream and brown patina. The variegated color enhances the character of this small jar that was once used to store oil or grains. Dating to the early 1900s, our Greek terra cotta jar can be used as a simple decorative item for a kitchen or dining room, or as a vase for faux flowers, grasses, or dried plants in just about any room of the house.
