Antique 1740 Encre de Chine Commande Chinese Porcelain Jesus Plate Qing China

About the Item

Damaged, but the best painted version I have ever seen Sharing with you this fantastic and unusual Chinese porcelain dish. Decorated in Encre de Chine or En grisaille. The centre with a carefully drawn scene of "The Crucifixion' en grisaille after a European style drawing or print. There is considerable detail, with one soldier mocking and four others casting lots for the robe. In the background are Mary and St John and a crowd This dish was part of a set of 3 encre de chine plates with Christian theme. The birth, cruxifiction & resurection of Jesus. The decoration is after an engravings by the Dutch artist Jan Luyken (1649-1712). The plates were made in ca 1740. There is a fourth plate with Ascension, but that one is only known in polychrome. So not part of this set. Very interesting is to notice the Chinese features given to the people in the painting. Most Chinese painters had never seen Europeans. Also notice the "boobs" on Jesus on the cross. It is speculated this came to happen because on the rare occasion Europeans were seen, they where rich merchants that were well "fed". Condition Restored and some fritspots to rim. Size 23x2.8CM DiameterxHeight

Located in Amsterdam, Noord Holland
A Chinese Porcelain Caddy with an erotic scene Yongzheng Qianlong period Fantastic and highly detailed decoration in Grisaille/Encre de Chine Chickens having intercourse. Beautiful piece for collectors. Museum Example. Encre de Chine The use of black enamel in imitation of drawings or prints was first developed at the end of the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722) and the Yongzheng reign (1723-1730). Chinese porcelains decorated in ink colour became popular in Europe around 1740, and until about 1790 continental clients continued to order them, especially for armorials, because the ink-colour process so readily duplicated the engraved bookplates supplied to the decorators as source materials. The technique may have been developed first for use on glass in the 1660s in Germany, where it was called schwarzlot. Eighteenth-century shipping records sometimes may have referenced it as pencilled ware because it was executed with a thin brush called a pencil. Albert Jacquemart dubbel it encre-de-Chine. Another name Jesuit ware was used still...
