Heavily Worked 19th C. French Brass Jardiniere with Paw Feet and Cherub Handles

About the Item

Virtually no section of this French brass jardiniere is unadorned, with vivid images inspired by items found in nature (such as paw feet) and mythology (genii and cherubs). The heavily worked planter was crafted by a master artisan during the 1800s, with each section independently detailed, as seen by joineries at the bottom of the interior. Supported by four large monopodial paw feet topped with fleur de lys and volutes, the bulbous main body features identical scenes that expanse across both of the longer sides of the ovate jardiniere. On the thickest section of the jardiniere, a wonderful foliate rinceaux can be seen emerging from the tails of two genii clutching a tall vase. The background is textured, as is the neck, which is embellished with grotesque mascarons, each accompanied by two overflowing cornucopias and foliate margents with birds. This panoramic scene is set in between two rings of foliate niches, with the uppermost one beneath a slightly rolled rim of egg-and-dart with beading. On each of the short side is an impressive, winged cherub mount with a protruding roundel and foliate handle. Our brass jardiniere with paw feet and cherub handles would make a wonderful indoor planter for any room of the house.

19th Century Hand Painted Faience Jardiniere on Pedestal from Boulogne, France
Located in Dallas, TX
This fantastic faience jardiniere and pedestal were hand-painted in Boulogne, France (formally “Boulogne-sur-Mer”) in the late 1800’s. The vibrant set features heraldic displays set among foliate and floral illustrations. Both the pedestal and the jardiniere have white backgrounds festooned with green leaves and blue, yellow, orange, and purple flowers. The opening of the jardiniere has asymmetrical edges dotted by small piercings, with flowering vines painted along the inner rim. Exquisite handles, comprised of curled leaves and C-scrolls, are affixed to the sides of the lobed body. Numerous painted motifs grace the area between the handles, including drapery, scrolls, and floral baskets hanging from an arabesque border. Equally impressive décor can be seen on the tetrapartite stand with a molded top. Each layer of the molding has a different color scheme, ranging from yellow with volute embellishments to solid green. The neck of the stand has been adorned with floral displays above multi-colored scrolls, shells, and scalloped leaves. In the center of each scalloped leaf is a distinct heraldic shield: on one side is a French style shield representing the city of Boulogne, with a swan that symbolizes perfection. On the opposite side is coat of arms topped by a closed crown, emblazoned with a five-fold cross over three roundels, which is the coat of arms for Godfrey of Bouillon, the first ruler of Jerusalem, who was born in Boulogne. Beneath the coat of arms are a pair of scrolled feet adorned with scalloped leaves and scrolls. There are two more feet to the sides that have pierced elements with floral vines beneath. Our 19th century hand-painted faience jardiniere on pedestal...

Circa 1800 French Copper 2-Handled Vase with Chariot and Cartouche
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-worked circa 1800, this French vase is adorned with a chariot and cartouche scene. Some of the elements were hammered from the front side, in a metalworking technique known as chasing, while other motifs were worked from the verso side, which is known as repousse. It is not uncommon for the two methods to be used in tandem, and the work of this particular artisan is top notch. The 5 ¾ diameter opening is flanked by two flared out handles that terminate on the widest part of the main body. A flowing foliate margent (repousse) adorns the top of the body, beneath the lightly textured thick neck (chased). The leaf theme continues beneath a thin ring of roundels that frames the upper body, with a sprawling foliage display that wraps around the lower body, interrupted by a pair of cartouches. One scene depicts a man in a toga with a laurel wreath crown...
