About the Item
A gorgeous turquoise blue Majolica jardiniere made by the French manufactory Sarreguemines circa 1880-1890. The jardiniere is decorated in the eclectic Japonisme-style with beautifully hand-painted birds among pine branches, faux cloisonne, and cobalt blue elephant handles.
Though originally developed and popularized in England, Majolica had a far-reaching influence on ceramicists throughout the world, with wares appearing in the United States and the Continent during the late nineteenth century. This jardiniere, made by the French manufactory Sarreguemines in 1880-1890, displays the exoticizing and eclectic Japonisme style that became popular in the West at the end of the century. The Sarreguemines jardiniere’s style and colors share a similar language with its English counterparts, revealing that the French were undergoing something of a majolique manie themselves.

Late 19th-Century Iznik-Style Vase by Samson
By Edmé Samson
Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
An Iznik-style vase made by Edmé Samson et Cie after a 16th-century Turkish bottle vase in the collection of the Musée d'Ecouen.
The vase’s bulbous body is decorated in a red, cobalt blue, turquoise, and green floral design of saz leaves, roses, and tulips. The neck is decorated with delicate floral sprays. The design is highlighted with gilding throughout, and is intentionally sparse around the turquoise area of the neck to mimic the wear of the 16th-century vase after which it was modelled. A brilliant turquoise Art Deco pottery jardinière made by the French faiencerie Longwy circa 1920.
The jardiniere was part of a special line for the Atelier Primavera, the in-house design studio in the Paris department store Au Printemps. The atelier, created in 1912, aimed to provide affordable modern French design to middle-class consumers. It was the first time a Parisian magasin developed its own line of products.
