19th Century Antique French Coal Scuttle in Repousse Brass with Handle and Paws

About the Item

An extremely decorative, antique, statement piece. This antique coal scuttle has been sourced in France and dates from the 1800s. Coal scuttles used to be everyday utility items. For those how could afford it at the time, it was important that this kind of item, often on display next to a coal heater, was also decorative and corresponded to the often elegant surroundings. This stunning coal shuttle was most likely used in a stately home or manor during the Victorian era. A time when design was all about excess of ornaments. The Victorian era is known for its interpretation and eclectic revival of historic styles mixed with foreign influences. This coal scuttle is no exception. It is made of highly ornate brass repusse sheets lined with zinc on the inside. The brass surface, handle included, features an abundance of flowers, leafs and decorative arches in relief. The scuttle stands on four elegant paws. In fair antique condition. This is an item that has been used daily in the past and consequently it shows signs of wear and age. No sections are missing. It has not been re-gilded in the past nor polished but left in its beautiful, original patina. It has a few holes around the edges of the base (see photos). Today antique, open coal scuttles like this one are often used as umbrella/cane stands, vessels for larger flower/branch arrangements or simply as decorative items that adds a bit of character and shimmer to an interior.
