About the Item
Each porcelain pot delicately decorated with flowers and raised on an exquisitely chased tripod base headed by lion heads.
These Chantilly porcelain pots were embellished in Paris with neoclassical mounts made to look like solid gold ('ormolu') that were used as bases, thereby emphasizing the delicate beauty of the porcelain, the same way a precious stone is set off by its gold monture in a piece of jewelry. The mounting of both Asian and European porcelain became a standard and lucrative practice for the Parisian marchands merciers. These “makers of nothing and sellers of everything” as described by Diderot also invented new models for porcelain by giving them pierced mounts and turning them into incense burners or pot pourri holders. Such pieces were collectibles known as 'objet montes', literally mounted objects.
In eighteenth-century France, gilt bronze played important functional and decorative roles in the houses of those who could afford it. This pair of objects with unusually elaborate and sculptural gilt-bronze mounts offers a spectacular example of the transformation that can be effected by the addition of mounts. The profile of each vessel is radically changed. The cost of gilt-bronze mounts was considerable, and a pair such as ours would have been very expensive. Eighteenth-century auction catalogues indicate that mounted objects such as this were frequently found in aristocratic collections, and always sold very well.
