Empoli Glass Opaline Florence Set of Vases, Italy, 1950s.
Located in VALENCIA, ES
These Empoli Glass Opaline Florence set of Mid Century vases, handcrafted in Italy circa the 1950s, represent a beautiful example of vintage Italian glassware. Empoli, in Tuscany region, Italy, has a long tradition of glassmaking, and the Empoli glassworks were known for producing high-quality glass items during the mid-20th century. Opaline glass, characterized by its translucent and milky appearance, was a popular material for decorative objects and tableware during the 1950s. The pastel colors commonly associated with this era, such as soft blues, greens, and pinks, add to the charm and appeal of these vases. Handcrafted in Italy, each vase in the set likely exhibits exquisite craftsmanship, attention to detail and a beautiful form. Italian artisans have long been revered for their skill in glassmaking, and their techniques have been passed down through generations. These Mid Century pastel-colored vases are not only functional pieces but also works of art that capture the essence of the era's design aesthetic. Their delicate hues and elegant forms make them versatile additions to any interior decor scheme, whether displayed individually or as a set. If you have a set of Empoli Glass Opaline Florence vases from the 1950s, they are undoubtedly treasures worth cherishing. Their vintage appeal and historical significance make them sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of Mid Century Modern design. Displayed prominently in your home, these vases can evoke a sense of nostalgia and sophistication while adding a touch of Italian craftsmanship to your decor. Measurements: Tall green one H. 46cm/ 18.2in Taller pink pitcher...

Vase Designed by Tapio Wirkkala, Finland, 1957
Located in Stockholm, SE
Vase designed by Tapio Wirkkala, Sweden, 1957. Sterling silver. Dimensions: H: 24 cm/ 9 3/8" W: 9 cm/ 3 1/2" D: 4 cm/ 1 1/2" Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) can be described as one of the icons of Finnish design and a symbol of the international success of post-war Finnish design. Tapio Wirkkala studied sculpture at the Helsinki Central School of Industrial Design from 1933 until 1936, but he was also a self-studied artist in many areas, including glass design. His success as a glass artist began in 1946 when he designed one of his most famous works, the Kantarelli vase, for Iittala. Wirkkala gained worldwide success in 1951 at the Milan Triennial, where he received three Grand Prix awards: for the exhibition architecture, glass design and wooden sculptures. Tapio Wirkkala felt a deep relationship with nature and his absolute favourite spot was located in Finland's deepest forests. From the beautiful landscape, Tapio Wirkkala could find inspiration for his works, often characterised by organic shapes. Leaves, birds, ice and water are recurring themes in his design. Tapio Wirkkala was also a furniture designer and a sculptor. He started his career as a sculptor in the 1930s but abandoned the traditional sculpture in the post-war years – in the early 1950s, alongside with other works, he started to develop an entirely new relationship with sculpture and a new technique to be used. The result was a series of unique plywood sculptures which combined form and movement in the vibrant, densely lineated surface of plywood. Wirkkala’s sculptures represented exceptional abstractism and gave Finnish sculpture...

Antique and Vintage Vases for Sale

Whether it’s a Chinese Han dynasty glazed ceramic wine vessel, a work of Murano glass or a hand-painted Scandinavian modern stoneware piece, a fine vase brings a piece of history into your space as much as it adds a sophisticated dynamic.

Like sculptures or paintings, antique and vintage vases are considered works of fine art. Once offered as tributes to ancient rulers, vases continue to be gifted to heads of state today. Over time, decorative porcelain vases have become family heirlooms to be displayed prominently in our homes — loved pieces treasured from generation to generation.

The functional value of vases is well known. They were traditionally utilized as vessels for carrying dry goods or liquids, so some have handles and feature an opening at the top (where they flare back out). While artists have explored wildly sculptural alternatives over time, the most conventional vase shape is characterized by a bulbous base and a body with shoulders where the form curves inward.

Owing to their intrinsic functionality, vases are quite possibly versatile in ways few other art forms can match. They’re typically taller than they are wide. Some have a neck that offers height and is ideal for the stems of cut flowers. To pair with your mid-century modern decor, the right vase will be an elegant receptacle for leafy snake plants on your teak dining table, or, in the case of welcoming guests on your doorstep, a large ceramic floor vase for long tree branches or sticks — perhaps one crafted in the Art Nouveau style — works wonders.

Interior designers include vases of every type, size and style in their projects — be the canvas indoors or outdoors — often introducing a splash of color and a range of textures to an entryway or merely calling attention to nature’s asymmetries by bringing more organically shaped decorative objects into a home.

On 1stDibs, you can browse our collection of vases by material, including ceramic, glass, porcelain and more. Sizes range from tiny bud vases to massive statement pieces and every size in between.
