About the Item

I am pleased to introduce a glazed ceramic vase from the Liao dynasty of China, dating from the 11th century, about 1,000 years ago. The Liao was a dynasty of the Qidan people who flourished in northern China from the 10th to 12th centuries. This dynasty, established by the nomadic Qidan people, developed a unique culture different from that of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the aesthetic sensibility of the people of the steppes was strongly reflected in their pottery. This work is one of the most valuable burial accessories that convey such Liao culture to the present day. The distinctive features of this piece are the open mouth of the flower, the rounded body, and the narrowing of the body from the waist down. The more you look at it, the more beauty you will find in the curves that are connected without any stumbling blocks. The glaze is “brown glaze,” which was widely used in Liao dynasty pottery, and is finished in a warm candy color. In addition to this brown glaze, white and green glazes also existed, and these colors are representative of Liao pottery. In addition, a photograph of a similar piece was published in an art book and is included as reference material. The process involves applying a white glaze over a coarse reddish clay, then glazing and firing the glaze on top of the white glaze to produce a unique depth and luster. Despite being an excavated piece, the surface remains transparent and shiny, and depending on the angle of the light, the piece looks as if it were made of amber. The texture of the clay skin that can be seen under the glaze is one of the tastes that remind us of the layering of time. There is a very small chip on the mouth rim. There are also some glaze peels on the body, but these are the result of contact with other ceramics in the kiln, which gives us an idea of how it was fired at that time. There are no cracks or major losses, and the condition is very well preserved for an excavation. Liao dynasty pottery in such good condition is difficult to find today, and we were fortunate to be able to acquire this piece. It has sufficient presence even when displayed as it is, but a single branch or wild flower will add elegance and serenity to the space. This work is made of soft ceramic, so it may leak if water is directly poured into it. When using it, it is safer to use a separate container inside. A wooden box and cloth bag for storage are included, making it suitable for storage and transportation.
