Superb antique Chinese porcelain zhadou. Blue de Hue porcelain for the Vietnamese market. Decorated with butterflies, flowers and bats. The porcelain is almost like soft paste from the Qianlong period. Such small 'zhadou' were used as table-top slops jars rather than as floor spittoons. When making tea, the Chinese first rinse the cups and teapot in boiling water to cleanse and warm them. Such water would be jettisoned into a 'zhadou' along with tea dregs and other waste.
