About the Item

Antique Kashmiri Silver Bird-Shaped Ewer Vessel Circa early 20th century Kashmir Dimensions: Height: 9 in. (23 cm) x Width: 9 in. (23 cm) A striking and whimsical work of ceremonial silver, this antique Kashmiri ewer is designed in the form of a majestic bird—its proud neck arched, beak parted in a timeless pose, and the spout emerging naturally from the curve of the creature’s body. Crafted entirely by hand, this sculptural vessel blurs the line between functional object and folk-inspired sculpture. The body is repoussé and finely hand-chased with individually tooled feathers, creating a vivid texture across the rotund form. Gracefully incised wings curl along the flanks, while a bold tailfin of stylized plumage rises vertically from the rear, adding a theatrical flourish. The handle arches overhead like a vine, complete with serpent-like terminals—a detail hinting at local mythological symbology. The neck and spout are modeled with remarkable realism, imitating a bird’s anatomy down to the ringed segmentation of its elongated throat. The head features charmingly expressive facial detailing, including incised eyes, a delicately formed beak, and a pronounced crest. Atop the vessel sits a domed lid with a pointed finial, completing its temple-like presence. Features: Hand-hammered from solid silver, exhibiting deep repoussé work and detailed chasing Folk-Mughal hybrid aesthetic, rooted in Kashmiri metal traditions Symbolic of abundance, fertility, and ceremonial hospitality Ideal as a collector’s object or statement display piece in refined interiors Condition: Very good antique condition with a naturally aged patina that highlights its handmade quality. Minor surface wear and oxidation consistent with age. Lid fits snugly; spout and handle structurally sound. Collector's Note: More than a vessel, this ewer is a celebration of Kashmiri artisanal wit—an object that channels avian grace, courtly traditions, and sculptural delight into a single charismatic form. Rarely found in such preserved condition and scale, it’s a conversation piece of considerable charm and craftsmanship.
