About the Item

Swedish designer Ingeborg Lundin originally designed this Apple (Äpplet) vase in 1955 for the Helsingborg Exhibition, a world exhibition dedicated to modern design. It was thereafter, in 1957, presented at the Milan Triennale where it was awarded a gold medal and has since become Ingeborg Lundin's most famous design for the Swedish glass factory Orrefors. By the late 1940s, young Lundin and her contemporaries at Orrefors and other Scandinavian glassworks were developing new forms that expressed the spirit of a softer, organic form of modernism. Their work broke with the strict forms that were characteristic of the rationalist modernism that prevailed in the decades before the Second World War. During the nearly thirty years (between 1947 and 1971) that Ingeborg Lundin designed glassware for the Swedish glass factory Orrefors, her designs were praised for their originality, simplicity and grace. The 'Äpplet' is part of many important museum collections.
