About the Item
Striking large ceramic vase features the organic, rounded shape with 3 curved, free-flowing decorative handles. It is decorated in characteristic Belgian Art Nouveau style with the use of warm, earthy tones and varied glaze finish, creating light texture. Predominantly brown-beige palette is accentuated with light blue glaze accents. Subtle variations in background glaze color and sparingly used drip glaze guide the eye towards the fluid shapes of the rim and the handles.
The vase is marked on the bottom with "Made in Belgium" and shape number, consistent with the way La Faiencerie de Wasmuël pieces were marked. The glaze is reminiscent of Faïenceries de Thulin pottery (another great Belgian art pottery) and certain styles of Denbac vases, made in 1920s. Soft, organic palette of the glaze and graphic shape make the vase an important example of Belgian art pottery of Art Nouveau period.
Sculptural, decorative vase with unusual form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Art Deco, Eclectic, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Grand Millennial, Maximalist, Collected, or Contemporary.
The interest in ceramics as applied art grew considerably among the Belgian artistic avant-garde in the 1890s, when artists were trying to define Belgian social integrity and identity against other European countries undergoing the same total design reform. A pull toward primitivism and interest in the crafts tradition through an understanding of earlier traditional and even rustic pottery contributed to widespread use of the vernacular as a dominant form, creating a distinct style of faience and ceramics.
"Auguste Mouzin et Cie" (AMC), later renamed "La Faiencerie de Wasmuël", operated in the south-west region of Belgium called the Borinage, in small village of Wasmuël. From 1878 to 1951 AMC was producing fine quality ceramic pieces and ceramic clocks. Thulin pottery was founded in 1887 near Mons in Belgium; Faïenceries de Thulin, that succeded Ducobu Faïenceries in 1923, was noted for its art pottery decorated with crystalline and running glazes.

Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Vase with Relief Decor, Italy Mid Century
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze.
The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...
