"Bacchanale", Unique Art Deco Vase w/ Nudes by Rheinfelden, Ruddy & Black Tones

About the Item

Unique and striking, this Art Deco vase by Arnold Zahner for Rheinfelden, an old Swiss ceramics firm, depicts a frieze of nude figures enjoying the pleasures of pastoral life. A Pan-like male figure playing the flute is prominent, as is a female figure dancing with a fluttering length of fabric. Others are shown lounging, sleeping or resting, overseen by a group of birds and a putto with a fluttering ribbon. Zahner used rich glazes in black, ruddy brown and pale rose which clearly reflect ancient Greek prototypes. The vase is well marked on the bottom.
