Ercole Barovier for Ferro Toso Barovier, murano glass vase "avventurina"

About the Item

A nice "avventurine" Murano glass vase with applied handles made in the 1930ties by Ferro Toso Barovier, designed by Ercole Barovier. The vase was decorated with copper inclusions and one dark violett "zebrato" thread, which was spun around the blown vessels, after casing it with another clear layer, two handles were applied free hand, as was the rim of the opening and the foot, all of them decorated with inclusions of gold foil. Some ash inclusions are found inside the glass, however they underline the age and hand crafted character of this vessel. Avventurine is an old technique in the repertoire of many masters on Murano. It was discovered by chance in the 17th century, by combining molten glass with molten metal, bringing forth the characteristic glittering effect of these vessels. Cf. Marc Heiremans, 20th century Murano glass, Arnoldsche, Stuttgart 1996, p. 47, N° 46.
