Eric Ploen Studio Ceramic Bottle Vase 1960's Oil Fired Tenmoku and Chrome Green

About the Item

Erik Ploen spent much of 1964 in residence at the University of Chicago where he was able to focus on the high fired stoneware and glazes that became the focus of his work in the 1960's and beyond. Upon his return to Norway, his work burst upon the art scene as he manipulated form and the iron based Tenmoku type glazes to extraordinary effect. The greens in this example suggest the judicious use of chrome and near perfect firing condition. Iron based glazes, when fired in oil or gas kilns sometimes manifest an iridescent microcrystalline sheen as is seen emphasizing the drips and contours of this asymmetrical bottle vase form. This Norwegian Modern masterpiece has evolved from the Mangei tenmoku tradition and is manifest on a form that appears inspired by the antique glass decanters and bottles in use in Europe for centuries.
