About the Item
Garniture of Three Early Victorian Coalport Porcelain Vases with Applied Flowers, England, circa 1840
A fine garniture of three early Victorian porcelain vases, attributed to Coalport, England, circa 1840.
Each vase is of baluster form with a flared rim and scrolled rococo-style handles, richly adorned with hand-modelled and enamelled floral appliqués. The front of each vase features a finely hand-painted landscape reserve—one depicting a classical temple with figures, the others showing romanticised English rural scenes with cottages and Gothic ruins. The footed bases are lobed and highlighted in gilt, with further gilt flourishes throughout the body.
These vases are a striking example of mid-19th century English porcelain at its most decorative, characteristic of Coalport's elaborate floriferous style, often historically associated with the “Coalbrookdale” type.
