About the Item

Originally used for fermenting rice or sorghum into wine or vinegar, this squat, earthenware vessel from the early 20th century is coated inside and out with a thick, dark glaze. The rich brown glaze sheets and pools over the jar's textured sides, lingering on imperfections with an organic, drip-glaze effect. Subtle ridges and indentations throughout suggest the jar was fashioned by coiling flattened ropes of clay and then tapped with a paddle into the desired shape. Rich with character, the jar exemplifies the timeless appeal of handcrafted pottery and is a wonderful addition to the home as a vase or centerpiece vessel.
