About the Item
Graphic art glass vase was created with intertwining spiral coil helixes in dark red and pale-yellow glass fused in clear glass layer; the clear glass is encasing the deep, complex blue glass core in sommerso technique. The placement of helixes in clear glass layer creates an unexpected play of light and shadows, adding depth and definition to the piece. Minimal shape of the vase allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage.
The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; rare, hard to find example of New Mexico studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector.
Henry Summa (1949-2008) has been working in glass since 1972. His early training in the glass arts was based on an apprenticeship at renowned Glory Hole Glassworks in New Mexico. Canyon Road Studio, known then as Glory Hole Glassworks, was owned by Peter Vanderlaan who, with Dale Chihuly and Bruce Chow, built the glass furnace at the Santa Fe Indian School. Vanderlaan studied and taught at Pilchuck; Glory Hole Glassworks became a training field for artists who became instrumental in building the art-glass movement in New Mexico, such as Mel Knowles and Jack Miller, Peter Vanderlaan, Henry Summa, Daphne Morrissey, Jenny Langston, Charlie Miner, Peet and Susan Robison, Paul White, Waine Archer and Elodie Holmes. The Canyon Road Studio spun off six “hot shops” and numerous associates who blew glass but who then went on to work with torch-blown, fused or cast productions.
Summa built his first studio in New York near Woodstock; in 1973-1974 Nancy Freeman, a well-known early studio glass artist based in Catskills Mountains of New York, apprenticed at Summa's studio. Though she closed her studio in the late 1980s, Freeman’s work is part of several museums and private collections. After 2 years in New York Summa moved his studio back to New Mexico, returning to established relationship with art galleries and stores around the country. His work was growing away from functional forms into more sculptural and complex designs. Summa's work can be seen in galleries, museums, and personal art collections around the world.

His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
