About the Item

Although Rene Lalique reigned supreme when it came to high-end, cast glass pieces in the stylized manner we now call Art Deco, in the related field of enameled and decorated glass, Jean Luce was one of France's master designers. This vase, hand decorated in a dense, very French pattern of flowers and leaves in white and black enamels, is one of the finest Luce pieces we have seen. The plant forms are enameled in white, while the border and some of the interstitial spaces are outlined in black -- a very effective and dramatic design approach. This piece probably dates from the early to mid-1920s, when Luce specialized in enamels over clear glass. Luce was a Juror for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925, and the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in 1937. In 1935, he designed porcelain and glass pieces for the ocean liner Normandie. The vase is marked on the bottom.
