Italy Late 18th Century Pair Yellow Lacquered on Silk Wooden Vases with Flowers

About the Item

This is a rare, refined and magnificent wooden sculpted pair of vases, carved and lacquered on silk with polychrome Chinese figures and flowers on a yellow background. These elegant pieces hails from the Late 18th Century, Torino, Piemonte, Italy. The shape and the decorations showcase exquisite craftsmanship through meticulously depictions of flora and Oriental man figures lending the pieces a captivating decorative charm. The technique of decoration is called "ad arte povera", that means that some drawings are created by collage of some part in paper. Sheet of fabric silk was used to make some layers of vessel lining. It is an exquisite pair of lacquered vases that can perfectly matches with the beauty of every timeless home. Lacquer is a natural resin that was very rare in the past, imported from the East and used to create smooth and colored surfaces on furniture, ready to be finely decorated with refined floral designs or exotic animals. The Venetian artisans became masters in lacquer processing which required time and patience because it was made with many steps and this technics was imitated in Italy and Europe Referring bibliography: A pair of similar vases were featured as Venetian in: Lacche veneziane Settecentesche, translated; 18th Century Venetian lacquers, S. Levy, Gorlich, 1967, Tav.465 The pieces are in very good state od maintenance and they are guaranteed original in every parts. The surface was only cleaned not restored and it is original. The pair of vases has the Certificate of Authenticity. The documents will be shown on demand in case of interest.
