Jasba Keramik Set of 2 Lava Vases, West German Pottery 1960s

About the Item

Set of 2 vintage vases features bright lava glaze in white, accentuated with pink, orange, mint green, and yellow overlays over dark espresso brown background glaze. The rims are accentuated with thin gold border, and the inner surfaces are done in monochromatic espresso brown glaze. Minimal, elegant shapes of the vases allow the bright, Op-Art style glaze to take center stage. This particular glaze is often referred to as Bamberg Dekor series, and most sources agree on dating it to 1960. The vases are signed on the bottoms with model/size numbers; the smaller vase is marked with the foil manufacturer sticker. The larger vase stands 8.4" tall, and the smaller - 6.6" tall. Jasba Keramik was founded in 1926 by Jakob Schwaderlapp in Ransbach-Baumbach; it become one of well-known manufacturers of West German Pottery in mid 20th century. The company produced a variety of ceramics, including vases, jugs, and bowls, inspired by ancient civilizations. In 1957, the ceramicist and décor designer Cilli Wörsdörfer joined Jasba after working at Ruscha, where she had created the popular 'Domino' and 'Milano' décors in 1954. Her colorful, abstract work revitalized the previously conventional appearance of Jasba's ornamental ceramics. She created the décors 'Tuscany,' 'Udine,' and 'Verona' (1957), followed up with 'Ghana' and 'Karo' (1958). In 1960 Wörsdörfer ended her artistic career and handed over her position to Christiane Reuter, who created 'Bunte Welt der Keramik' (Colorful World of Ceramics) series, initiating the introduction of newer stylistic tendencies and bright colorful glazes at Jasba in late 1962. Reuter is also celebrated as the designer of the iconic 'Acapulco' dinnerware décor for Villeroy and Boch (1967). In 1959 Jakob Schwaderlapp founded Ceramano, Jasba sister company, to pursue the production of innovative, higher-end forms and glazes, intended to resemble the work of studio potters. In 1975 Jasba ceased production of vases, and the company concentrated on industrial items and architectural tiles.
