Joel O'Dorisio for Lost Angel Glass Vase, American Studio Art Glass

About the Item

Fused glass vase features complex multilayered colored glass core in ruby red, beige, cream, and deep cobalt blue colors, encased in clear glass in sommerso technique. Inclusion of metallic pigments in cream glass elements adds another layer of complexity and enhances the perceived texture of the vase. Minimal shape of the vase allows the colorful design to take center stage and to guide the along the curvatures and lines of the piece. This is how the artist describes his approach to creating blown glass pieces: "To manipulate color and light, I use applications of 2 or 3 transparent colors to create pleasing combinations. Colors in glass have properties of both additive and subtractive color systems. Light reflected from the surface of glass, particularly opaque glass, uses a primarily subtractive color system, but light passing through transparent glass becomes malleable. Technically light passing through layers of transparent colors is filtered, but successive layers of filtering create new colors, and layers of light projected on a surface can become additive. Curves in the form can focus or disperse light based on the shape." The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching in the bottom (Lost Angel '99). Joel O'Dorisio's work concentrates on traditional blown glasswork and cast sculptural glass. He earned his BFA from Ohio State University, and went on to earn an MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He opened his own studio and gallery, Lost Angel Glass, in Corning, N.Y., in 1998. O’Dorisio began teaching in 2005 and is currently Director of Arts Village Learning community at Bowling Green State University, where he also teaches glass. His work focuses on the interaction between humanity and the natural environment, specifically using natural textures as a metaphor for nature's chaotic beauty. More recent work includes design-based ideas that blend a variety of technical elements and explore the diverse nature of glass as a sculptural material. His work has been exhibited at the Carnegie Center for Arts and History, the Museum of American Glass in New Jersey, and the Toledo Museum of Art. O'Dorisio's work is also in many private, corporate, and museum collections around the world.

Jon Kuhn Early Sculptural Op-Art Vase, American Art Studio Glass, 1982
By Jon Kuhn
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Triangular faceted vase features a graphic pattern of ruby red, white, and dichroic glass encased in clear glass layers in sommerso technique. The body of the vase is cut and polished in triangular shape, exposing complex, colorful core; the subtle sheen of dichroic glass adds complexity and visual interest to a reserved color scheme. The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; this rare, hard to find example of American studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass, art collector, or modern design enthusiast. Jon Kuhn is one of the foremost glass artists in his field, creating highly intricate architectural glass art sculpture that has won world-wide acclaim. He received BFA from Washburn University in 1974, MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978, and Honorary DFA from Washburn University in 2006. Jon Kuhn early work was done in molten glass, but currently he works in cold glass that is cut, polished, and fused, resulting in sculptures that take in surrounding light, then reflects and refracts it back; they appear to change color and radiance when viewed from different angles and lighting. Kuhn creates cold glass art in a variety of shapes and forms, but he is perhaps best known for his glass cubes which contain a colorful glass interior cased in clear glass. Kuhn’s work stands out for its complexity, its geometric forms, and for its mesmerizing presence. Jon Kuhn glass...
