About the Item

Josef Hoffmann’s fluted brass chalice was based on the elegant form of the Doric column, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek architecture to convey a sense of timeless order and proportion. The vertical grooves running along the surface of the chalices echoed the fluting of classical columns, reinforcing a rhythm of light and shadow that emphasized both structure and ornament. By referencing this architectural archetype, Hoffmann anchored his designs in a tradition of disciplined beauty, while simultaneously transforming it through the lens of early 20th-century modernism. Adopting an hourglass shape, they merged classical symmetry with modern refinement, creating a striking interplay between austerity and delicacy. Item #: YSI-22010 Artist: Josef Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkstätte Country: Austria Circa: 1923 Dimensions: 7.75" height Materials: Brass Signed: Josef Hoffmann monogram, WIENER/WERK/STÄTTE stamp, Made in Austria Documentation: model no. M 3067/M va 6 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Josef Hoffman’s oeuvre embodies the seismic aesthetic and philosophical shifts that defined avant-garde art and design at the turn of the 19th century. He was a founding member of the Vienna Secession, an organization of artists and designers who sought to breakaway from rigid historical precedents, and later, the Wiener Werkstätte, a workshop dedicated to the production of craftwork of everyday objects including ceramics, textiles, and furniture. Hoffman was integral to defining Western applied arts during this period. The Stoclet Palace (1905–11), Hoffman’s masterpiece, embodies the artistic tension of this era and reveals the architect’s prescience; the mansion’s decorative details recall the fluid stylization of Art Nouveau, while the stark exterior walls—sheets of white marble edged in gilded metal—anticipate the austere planes and strict geometry of the International Style.
