Japanese Contemporary Brown Platinum Hand-Glazed Porcelain Vase by Master Artist

About the Item

Extraordinary Japanese contemporary hand-glazed decorative porcelain vase with high purity platinum gilding, an award-winning exhibition piece, a masterpiece by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist of the Arita-Imari region of Japan. This outstanding piece brings together the best of platinum gilding and the yusai techniques, which involve the multiple layering of different glazes that fuse together in reduction firing to creating haunting visions of depth and movement. After the glazing and firing has been completed, the artist coats the entire outer surface of the vase with platinum. Then, in a process that takes scores of hours to complete, the artist patiently scrubs away at the platinum coating to reveal a tantalizing vision of platinum cascading down the vase. The inner surface of the vase provides the artist with a canvas for showing off the unpredictable colors and patterns that come to life from the Yusai technique. This mesmerizing masterpiece comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 13.5 in, D 16 in.

Japanese Porcelain Dragon Glazed Vase Mazuku Kozan
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
A porcelain vase with dragon motif by Japanese imperial potter Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916), circa 1900s. The vase is made in what is considered early phase of his underglaze period during late Meiji era. In a classic elongated baluster form, the surface of the vase was decorated in an unusual pink mist on a white and aubergine background (called Morotai, the Hazy style), on which a flying dragon is showcased on the center. The dragon was outlined in iron red and filled with the aubergine color and was artistically emphasized on its bulging eyes, claws, scales and a long tail. It was the sole focus of the design circumventing the entire body of the vase. The imagery calls in mind the dragon decoration found in Korean...
