About the Item

Large Chinese Cloisonné Enamel Floral Vases Wood Stands Chinese, 20th Century Vases: Height 78cm, diameter 36cm Bases: Height 15cm, diameter 38cm Overall: Height 93cm, diameter 38cm This striking pair of cloisonné enamel vases originates from China and dates to the 20th century. Each vase is decorated with vibrant depictions of blossoms, birds, and mythical creatures, all set against a deep green ground that enhances the vivid palette. Both pieces follow the same elegant form and are richly embellished using the cloisonné technique. This demanding process begins with fine metal wires, carefully bent and fixed onto a metal body to create intricate patterns. The spaces are then filled with enamel paste in various colours, fired at high temperature, polished smooth, and often finished with gilding. The result is a radiant surface with remarkable depth and precision - an art form requiring exceptional skill and patience. Across the decoration, natural motifs intertwine with geometric and scrolling designs. Each element carries symbolic significance in Chinese tradition: the chrysanthemum, for instance, conveys longevity and refinement, while the peony, regarded as the ‘king of flowers’, embodies prosperity, honour, and feminine grace. The unusual use of pastel tones - pinks, yellows, and oranges - balanced with earthy greens and browns gives these vases a distinctive and refined appearance. Rose-gold bands add further refinement, framing the decoration with subtle luxury. The pair is presented on finely carved wooden stands, their dark finish offering a striking contrast to the softer hues of the enamel. Exquisitely made and full of cultural symbolism, these vases showcase the artistry of Chinese enamel work and would make a distinguished addition to any interior or collection.
