About the Item

This commanding studio pottery vase is the work of Virginia artist Marlene Jack, a nationally recognized ceramicist whose practice merges Eastern aesthetic philosophy with American studio traditions. Jack studied under noted potters Warren MacKenzie—a key figure in the Mingei movement in the U.S.—and Chris Hoard, both of whom deeply influenced her sensitivity to form, texture, and the beauty of imperfection. Her work is architectural in presence, with a surface that bears the marks of both intention and fire: layered slips and glazes, gestural surface treatments, and atmospheric effects from the kiln that create a deeply expressive, textural finish. This piece is an excellent example of her approach—earthy, meditative, and monumental. Marlene Jack was the founder of the Ceramics program at The College of William & Mary, and served on the board of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) from 1981–1988. She was later named a Lifetime Fellow of the Council, a rare honor that speaks to her lasting impact on American ceramics. Her work has been widely exhibited in both solo and group shows, and is included in numerous public and private collections across the United States. This vase is not only a striking object, but also a testament to one of the most important female voices in post-war American studio pottery.
