About the Item
Jean-Marie Pointu was one of a few who fabricated, designed and painted French barbotine in gros relief (large or high relief), particularly floral and foliate relief in the Impressionist style. The forms and their decoration are of an extreme variety. The time and work to finish one realistic flower, let alone several, was arduous, painstaking, and required extremely fine artistic talent. The Kaolin clay was manipulated to a paper thin fineness, formed into layers of floral petals and leaves, colored and sometimes fired before applying more colors, applied to a vessel , glazed and fired. During the firing, months of work could be ruined if one was not using the utmost caution. The process would then need to start over.
This massive vase has ground colors of pale greens fading into a dark green/black. The high relief flowers are depicted in stages from buds to completely open flowers, almost past their prime—a technique extremely difficult to accomplish with wet clay.
This magnificent vase will be a wonderful addition to any French barbotine collection.

Circa 1800 French Copper 2-Handled Vase with Chariot and Cartouche
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-worked circa 1800, this French vase is adorned with a chariot and cartouche scene. Some of the elements were hammered from the front side, in a metalworking technique known as chasing, while other motifs were worked from the verso side, which is known as repousse. It is not uncommon for the two methods to be used in tandem, and the work of this particular artisan is top notch.
The 5 ¾ diameter opening is flanked by two flared out handles that terminate on the widest part of the main body. A flowing foliate margent (repousse) adorns the top of the body, beneath the lightly textured thick neck (chased). The leaf theme continues beneath a thin ring of roundels that frames the upper body, with a sprawling foliage display that wraps around the lower body, interrupted by a pair of cartouches. One scene depicts a man in a toga with a laurel wreath crown...

Marbled Blue Sèvres Porcelain Vase, France, Dated 1872
Located in Dallas, TX
From Sèvres, France, this lovely porcelain vase has been hand painted in a faux blue marble with black and white veining. The vase was produced in the style of a Greek stamnos, which was a vase designed to store liquids. Stamnoi are typically more squatty versions of krater vases, with handles high on the sides. The bottom of the vase is stamped with a production mark reading “Sevres 1872”.
Sevres is a commune southwest of Paris that is known for its porcelain production. Manufacture nationale de Sèvres is a premier European porcelain factory that has been in Sevres since 1756. From 1800-1847, Alexander Brongniart was the director of the factory. Trained as both an engineer and a scientist, Brongniart brought about many changes to the factory, such as improving the composition of hard-paste porcelain and developing enameled colors to simulate marble.

Very Large Antique French Sevres Style Porcelain Vase

Very large antique French Sèvres style porcelain vase
French, Late 19th Century
Height 154cm, diameter 41cm
This fantastic vase is the work of J. Pascault, a famed porcelain artist of the late 19th Century who specialised in the production of Sevres-style pieces. It is beautifully executed, and especially impressive given its large size of one and a half metres (almost 5 feet) in height.
The vase is tall and slender in shape, set on a gilt bronze plinth, and surmounted by a cover with a pinecone finial. Its ovoid body is decorated around its exterior in the Rococo taste: showing a female figure and winged putti in a landscape...
