About the Item

A magnificent and large Meissen Schneeballen (snowball) covered vase, richly adorned with a vibrant aviary and botanical ensemble in full three-dimensional relief. Crafted in the mid-to-late 19th century, this monumental porcelain masterpiece is a tour de force of naturalistic decoration, bearing the iconic blue underglaze crossed swords mark of the Meissen manufactory to the interior base. The surface of the vase is densely encrusted with hundreds of delicately hand-applied ‘Schneeballen’—small, intricate rosettes modeled to resemble snowballs, originally inspired by the double-flowered viburnum. These are interspersed with naturalistic green stems and veined leaves, winding organically around the baluster form and culminating in a domed lid surmounted by sculptural flora and perched birds. Encircling the vase and nestled among the blossoms are a lively array of exquisitely modeled and hand-painted birds, including colorful finches, parakeets, and a cockatoo—each feathered creature rendered with remarkable anatomical fidelity and painterly precision. Their plumage ranges from soft lilacs and rose tones to vivid blues, emeralds, and golds, standing in brilliant contrast against the soft ivory of the snowball ground. The detailing extends even to the interior, which shows the high-fired white glaze and a clean, finely turned foot. The lid, also densely covered in snowballs and foliage, features further perched birds, including a striking red-chested bullfinch atop green porcelain branches. The composition is both exuberant and balanced, a testament to the technical and artistic excellence that defined Meissen’s 19th-century sculptural work. The Schneeballen motif was first developed at Meissen in the mid-18th century and revived in the 19th century as a symbol of Rococo revival splendor and technical virtuosity. Pieces of this scale and detail were likely made for exhibition or high-level patronage, and few survive in such pristine condition. The hand-incised model number and painter’s marks are visible on the underside, confirming its authenticity and workshop origin. This vase exemplifies Meissen’s unmatched commitment to naturalistic porcelain sculpture and would make an extraordinary centerpiece in any serious collection of Continental porcelain or European decorative arts. By Chelsea Porcelain
Located in London, GB
This is a charming frill vase made by the Chelsea Porcelain factory in about 1760. The vase is in the Rococo style and it speaks for itself why this style of vase is called a "frill" vase. This vase has undergone restorations (although it still holds water perfectly) and is therefore offered As Found (A/F) at a reduced price. Chelsea was one of the very early adopters of porcelain in the British china industry. Founded in 1744 the Chelsea pottery was for about 40 years the leading maker of fine chinaware, excelling in their sense of style, perfection and constant innovation and inspiring many following generations of china makers.
