Michael Schunke for Nine Iron Studio Vase, American Studio Art Glass, 1995

About the Item

Large vintage art glass vase features deep, jewel-like color palette and complex sculptural shape. The vase has ovoid silhouette with flattened sides, forming an elongated disk-shaped body with long narrow neck, done in cobalt blue glass with gold inclusions. The neck is adorned with decorative pink glass handles and green glass collar; the vase is supported by the round base in mottled emerald green and Bordeaux red. The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom. Michael J. Schunke is a contemporary American glass artist and designer. With a strong sense of design focused on the relationship between line and volume, Schunke creates expressive silhouettes and containers of personal meaning. Since his introduction to glassmaking as a student at the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA and the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, Schunke has dedicated his practice to the pursuit of form and refining his method of making. Michael Schunke founded his first company, Nine Iron Studios, in 1998; since 2010 he operates Vetro Vero glassblowing and design studio with his wife, co-designer and fellow artist, Josie Gluck, in Chester County, Pa. Michael is an avid educator of the medium and teaches glassmaking around the globe. He is a former professor of Glass at the Toyama Institute of Glass Art in Toyama, Japan; and he has taught at the Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, WA; Haystack School of Crafts, Deer Isle, ME; Penland School of Crafts, Penland, NC; UrbanGlass, Brooklyn, NY; The Pittsburgh Glass Center, Pittsburgh, PA; Cam Ocagi, Istanbul, Turkey; Wheaton Arts, Millville, NJ; and Eugene Glass School, Eugene, OR. Michael is an award-winning artist, designer and maker who has been recognized as a Fellow at the Creative Glass Center of America, Millville, NJ; and as an Artist in Residence at The Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, and the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, OH. He has been hosted as a Visiting Artist at numerous museums and universities, most recently at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY; Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA; and The Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, MA. Jon Kuhn Early Sculptural Op-Art Vase, American Art Studio Glass, 1982
By Jon Kuhn
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Triangular faceted vase features a graphic pattern of ruby red, white, and dichroic glass encased in clear glass layers in sommerso technique. The body of the vase is cut and polished in triangular shape, exposing complex, colorful core; the subtle sheen of dichroic glass adds complexity and visual interest to a reserved color scheme. The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; this rare, hard to find example of American studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass, art collector, or modern design enthusiast. Jon Kuhn is one of the foremost glass artists in his field, creating highly intricate architectural glass art sculpture that has won world-wide acclaim. He received BFA from Washburn University in 1974, MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978, and Honorary DFA from Washburn University in 2006. Jon Kuhn early work was done in molten glass, but currently he works in cold glass that is cut, polished, and fused, resulting in sculptures that take in surrounding light, then reflects and refracts it back; they appear to change color and radiance when viewed from different angles and lighting. Kuhn creates cold glass art in a variety of shapes and forms, but he is perhaps best known for his glass cubes which contain a colorful glass interior cased in clear glass. Kuhn’s work stands out for its complexity, its geometric forms, and for its mesmerizing presence. Jon Kuhn glass...
