Large floor vase with decoration with sgraffito technique depicting the paradise garden of Eden. DESIGNER: Sven Törngren PRODUCER: Törngrens krukmakeri (Pottery) COUNTRY: Falkenberg, Sweden YEAR: Midcentury MATERIAL & METHOD: Stoneware, partly glazed. Sgraffito technique MEASURES: Height: 46 cm, Width at the broadest point: 25 cm. COLORS: Brown and milky white ABOUT THE POTTERY Törngrens Pottery was established in Falkenberg, Sweden by Hans Törngren 1789. During the latter part of the 18th century and all of the 19th a thriving pottery industry flourished in Falkenberg. It has been 21 different potteries in town. Today only Törngrens remains from those times. The methods of decoration used in Falkenbergs pottery were sometimes simple "sliptrailing"used a goose-quill pen or an animal horn to trail a pattern of white liquid clay (slip) on to the red-brown clay of the pot and other times "sgraffito" or "painting" where the whole red earthenware item was dipped in white slip and decoration scratched into or painted onto the surface. Törngrens Krukmakeri have still their own decorative patterns "TÖRNGRENS-MÖNSTRET" designed by Hans Törngren 1789 the man who started Törngrens Pottery.

    Wear consistent with age and use. One hair thin crack, that starts in the picture under the tree in the last photo. There is also a very small chip at the foot ring.

Exquisitely crafted by renowned ceramist Ingrid Atterberg for Uppsala Ekeby, this black, white and grey chamotte vase with a distinctive handle and rough surface epitomizes mid-century Scandinavian modern design. Ingrid Atterberg (1920–2008) designed many classic pieces for Upsala-Ekeby between the 1940s and 1960s. One of her most well-known series is "Progresso," created in 1958. This collection consists of eight earthenware items, including vases and bowls, characterized by their textured surfaces and rustic appearance. Each piece is deeply stamped on the underside with "UE," "Sweden," "Abg," and the model number. The "Progresso" series was produced until 1959. The vase has the shape of a classical urn and a swelling shape with a unique hand-decorated finish, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind. Standing at a height of 16 cm, this vase model, numbered 2358, to Upsala-Ekeby's era-typical craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility. Marked with a deep stamp indicating UE Sweden, 2358, and Abg.
