About the Item
Antique Nepalese Silver Ritual Ewer with Gilded Repoussé Panels
Circa late 19th – Late 19th century Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
Dimensions: Height: 12 in. (30.5 cm) x Width: 10 in. (25.5 cm)
A commanding and intricately adorned ceremonial ewer from Nepal, this antique vessel exemplifies Himalayan silversmithing at its most ornamental. Likely used in Buddhist or Newar ritual contexts, the form draws from traditional Tibetan and Nepalese aesthetics—rich in symbolism, detail, and cultural fusion.
The globular body is encased in repoussé floral and foliate patterns, with lavishly chased detailing covering nearly every surface. Four raised medallions with parcel-gilt inlay depict narrative vignettes—figures in garden settings, possibly drawn from sacred myth or local folklore, framed within flame-like cartouches.
The neck rises in a stepped cylindrical form, richly decorated with a tiered lotus motif and engraved petals, leading to a conical domed lid with a striking flame-finial. The hinged lid is attached with a fine chain, and the entire structure is crafted with ritual dignity and grace.
Most eye-catching is the dramatic cobra-like spout, sculpted with serpentine flair and dragon-head embellishment, paired with a handle shaped in stylized scales that culminate in a floral finial—both powerful design cues echoing protective iconography.
Key Features:
Handcrafted in solid silver alloy, partially parcel-gilt (fire-gilded highlights)
Rich repoussé, chasing, and engraving techniques throughout
Spout and handle inspired by mythological animal motifs, likely makara and naga
Decorative medallions gilded with 24k gold leaf or gold wash
Designed for ritual pouring of holy water or sacred offerings
Condition:
Very good antique condition with natural oxidation and darkening to silver, adding to its historical charm. Minor wear to gilding. Structurally sound, with intact lid and spout.
Collector's Note:
An exceptional example of Nepalese sacred silverwork, this ewer is more than a vessel—it's a storytelling sculpture in metal. Rich in iconography and ornament, it serves equally well as a museum-worthy centerpiece or a treasured addition to a collector of Himalayan, Buddhist, or ethnographic arts.

Kashmiri Mughal Bird Copper Ewer, Mid 19th Century
Located in Islamabad, PK
This exquisite piece of art seamlessly combines the intricate aesthetics of Mughal design with the skilled craftsmanship of Kashmiri artisans, resulting in a stunning and unique creation.
The copper ewer takes the form of a bird, with its body forming the main body of the vessel and its neck serving as the spout. The bird's wings, tail feathers, and even subtle details like beak and eyes are meticulously rendered, showcasing the artisan's attention to detail. The entire form of the ewer is fluid and elegant, capturing the essence of avian grace.
The surface of the copper ewer is adorned with elaborate Mughal-inspired engravings and embellishments. Floral patterns, intricate vines, and delicate geometric designs cover the bird-shaped body, creating a visually rich tapestry of artistry. The Mughal influence is evident in the precision of the decorative elements, reflecting the era's emphasis on fine craftsmanship and aesthetic sophistication.
The handle of the ewer, perhaps formed as a continuation of the bird's body or as a separate element, is designed for both functionality and artistic harmony. It complements the overall form, allowing for easy pouring while maintaining the cohesive avian aesthetic.
