About the Item

An Incredible and Quite Important Pair of 19th Century Pink Ground Paris Porcelain Vases. The pair of Paris porcelain campana vases bear gilt crowned initials, indicating a connection to European royalty. One vase displays the initials “C” and “A,” referring to the betrothal or marriage of Princess Clémentine of Orléans (1817-1907) to Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1818-1881) in 1843. The other vase bears the initials “L” and “V,” which reference the marriage of her brother, Prince Louis of Orléans (1806-1896), Duke of Nemours, to Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Kohary (1822-1857) in 1840. Each vase has a flared rim with a gilt band encircling the top edge. The body is decorated with a pink ground, interrupted by a rectangular painted panel framed in gilt. One panel depicts a kneeling male figure in armor with a shield inside an interior setting, while the other shows a seated female figure with a dog in a similar interior. The reverse of each vase is adorned with a gilded martial trophy. Two handles, arching outward from the upper body, are modeled as bearded male masks at their terminals. The lower portion of each vase tapers into a stepped foot, which is mounted on a square plinth base. The pink ground continues onto the base, where it is decorated with additional gilt latticework. The transition between the body and foot is defined by a rounded, gilded molding that separates the painted surface from the lower section. Paris, Circa: 1840
