About the Item

Pair of antique Villeroy & Boch early Mettlach Parian vases features elongated forms with flared reticulated rims, ornate reticulated twin handles, and Wedgewood style reliefs on the front and back sides of the vases. The reliefs depict a woman in a tunica stepping forward as if dancing while holding a basket of fruit above her head, and a man in flowing clothes with a long scarf, pouring wine from a jug. The soft grey background glaze is accented with highly detailed platinum trim on the base, rim, handles, and relief scrolls around the central motifs. The human figures and the inner surfaces of the vases are done in off-white color. The vases are marked on the bottom with chop marks, "319 VB", and museum catalogue numbers in writing. The early Mettlach mark was used between 1852 and 1872; most printed and online sources date the vase model # 319 to mid 19th century, circa 1860s. Provenance: The pieces were in collection of Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum, later simply known as Strong Museum, which is now Strong National Museum of Play (since 2006); it was released via deacquisition sale. Established in 1969 in Rochester, NY, the museum was initially based on the personal collection of Rochester native Margaret Woodbury Strong. The original mission of the museum was to interpret the social and cultural history of average Americans between 1830 and 1940; Mrs. Strong's collections of dolls and toys, American and European decorative arts, prints, paintings, Japanese crafts, and advertising ephemera provided a firm foundation for this mission. Later the museum changed its mission to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of play. Margaret Woodbury (1897-1969) was the only child of wealthy Victorian parents John Charles Woodbury and Alice Motley Woodbury, who spent a significant amount of time traveling the globe; Margaret was accompanying her parents, both passionate collectors, from an early age, gradually becoming an avid collector herself. She inherited and meticulously maintained the collections both parents had acquired over their lifetimes; after the death of her husband, she fully devoted herself to adding to her existing collections, with her interests spread to a variety of collecting areas, such as dolls, dollhouses, miniatures, books, bookplates, paintings, artwork, shells, and various antiques, including Asian and Japanese artifacts that were an area of special interest of her mother. We are offering multiple pieces of ceramics and glass, that were released from the former Strong Museum, in separate listings. Sculptural, graphic vases, distinguished with elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence, will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Neoclassical, Victorian, Transitional, Grand Millennial, Glam, Hollywood Regency, Collected, or Eclectic.

Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Vase with Relief Decor, Italy Mid Century
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...

Stoin for Burley Winter Pair of Vases, American Art Deco Pottery 1930s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage pair of Art Deco ceramic vases feature matte mottled and splash glaze in green and pastel pink palette. The minimal, but elegant shape of the vases, created in contemporary Art Deco style with strong Arts and Crafts influence, was used as a canvas to explore the effects that can be achieved with different applications of the tints and shades of green colored glaze on the pale pink background. The vases form the cohesive pair that offers an additional visual interest in glaze variations on surface decoration. The vases are marked with the identical model numbers on the bottoms; the definitive attribution can be made by various printed and online resources. The Burley Winter...
