About the Item

A rare 1970's Riedel glass vase by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and the Chávez Morado brothers, painter José and sculptor Tomás. The vase is the representation of the "Umbrella" the column in the middle of the towering fountain of the Nacional Museum of Anthropology and History of Mexico City. The column's relief represents the union of two cultures, the European culture and the native Mesoamerican culture. Using iconographic elements of both cultures, José Chávez Morado's composition represents the complexity of this fusion of races and traditions. The flower vase is sealed on its bottom. Pedro Ramírez Vázquez (1919 - 1913) was Mexico's most important architect of the second half of the 20th Century. He graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1943. He is the creative behind modern Mexico's most prominent buildings: Azteca Stadium, the new Basilica of Guadalupe, the National Museo of Anthopology and the AXA Tower (formely Mexicana Tower).
