Pr. 19th Century Russian Cobalt Blue & Gold Ground Swan Handle Porcelain Vases
Located in New York, NY
A fantastic quality pair of Russian Empire cobalt blue and gold ground swan handle porcelain vases. Each piece is of Amphora form with a gorgeous 24K gold matted, burnished, and shiny front and backside decoration. The front panels consist of a young girl and a young boy, where the young girl is seen holding food on her head with a water pale in her hand walking through the town, while the boy is seen holding a basket of fruit up and walking it back home. The reverse of each of the vases is also elaborately decorated with one of the scenes being a comfy home with a beautiful woody landscape with a deer running through the backyard, while the other vase has a gorgeous landscape scene with a man riding a horse in the background. On either side of the vases are two-tone matte and burnished 24K gold swan form handles. Underneath the handles are 24K gold hand-painted decorations over a cobalt blue ground. The body runs down a waisted gold neck onto a rounded base which sits on a square gold plinth...

Coalport Pair of Floral Gilded Sauce Tureens, Marquess of Anglesey, circa 1820
Located in London, GB
This is an extremely rare set of lidded sauce tureens made by Coalport in circa 1820. The tureens are decorated in the "Marquess of Anglesey" pattern. These sauce tureens would have formed part of a large dessert service. They were used for the sauce to be served on ice cream or a cooked sweet dish, and the lids have holes for the sauce ladles.
Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th century, coming out with many innovative designs. The pottery emerged around the year 1800 in Shropshire, right on the edge of Staffordshire and near other great makers such as Spode, Minton, Davenport and many others. They went on to become a major potter in the 19th century and brought out many iconic designs.
The Welsh Nantgarw factory first created the heavily gilded service for the Marquess of Anglesey, with beautifully painted flowers. Later the Swansea factory made additions to or copies of this service, and circa 1820 Coalport...

Three Staffordshire Porcelain Spill Vases Floral Cobalt Blue, Regency circa 1820
Located in London, GB
This is a set of three little spill vases made by an unknown Staffordshire maker in circa 1820, which was the Regency era. Two of the vases are cobalt blue, one is salmon, and all three have beautiful gilding and hand painted flowers.
Spill vases were used for match sticks to kindle the fire. Match sticks in 1820 weren't what they are today: they were short hand-cut sticks of wood and came in bundles. Everyone had a "spill vase" on the mantle piece or on a little side table next to the fire, so that the fire could be kindled at any moment.
In the early 19th century there were at some point 300 potteries in Staffordshire, and artists would move from pottery to pottery, attracted by competitive wages. Unless items are clearly marked, it is often difficult to identify them and I have not been able to clearly identify these three spill vases as everyone made them.
The two cobalt blue vases are clearly from the same maker; the salmon colored one is slightly shorter and different in shape, but basically the same. All have nicely shaped rims and three charming lion's claws as feet. There is beautiful gilding and stunning hand painted flowers in the reserves.
Condition report: All vases have some wear; one of the cobalt blue vases had a foot broken and restuck (this is stable and not very visible when in position) and the salmon vase...

Pair of Important Russian Gilt Bronze and Metal Vases
Located in London, GB
Pair of important Russian gilt bronze and metal vases
Russian, circa 1820
Dimensions: Height 98cm, width 43cm, depth 38cm
This monumental pair of vases are exquisitely crafted in gilt bronze and metal. They both feature twin scrolled handles, which are decorated with leaves and foliate patterns, as well as classical profiles at the top. These touch the ormolu rims, which feature an egg and dart pattern.
The body of each vase is of ovoid form and features further ormolu mounts, including a thick band underneath the waisted neck, twin dog heads at the base of the handles, flowers, stars and more Classical masks with foliate scrolls. The vases are supported by square plinths, with socle form bases and decorations of fluted ribbing and scrolled foliate forms.
Heavily inspired by the neoclassical style, which was popular in Russia in the late 18th and 19th centuries, the vases are decorated with gilt bronze relief scenes which allude to motifs in classical mythology. On a rich burgundy ground, the metal body of the vases show figures flanked by palm trees.
One vase shows a woman dressed in a classical draped fabric garment playing two flutes and leaning on a pedestal with twirling ivy, while a baby stands...
