About the Item
This is a very rare, highly individual and very decorative, very large Lidded Vase in the Chinoiserie style with applied dragons, made by Mason's Ironstone in the George 1Vth period, circa 1825.
The vase is well potted with a tapering hexagonal form on a raised pedestal foot.
This vase has a number of features that make it special;
1) Very large Size measuring 24.5 inches high (62.4cm)
2) The three applied dragons: two either side at the shoulder acting as handles and one to the top of the lid.
3) The distinctive bold decoration and intricate hand painting.
4) All decorated in the Chinoiserie manner.
The decoration is Chinoiserie throughout, with the moulded dragons set against a turquoise ground color with many scrolls that could depict clouds with some scattered flower heads. The main body has six panels depicting various different Chinese scenes of people and landscapes, two large to the front and back and two smaller panels to either side. The foot and neck are enameled in a deep mazarine blue with gold hand gilded floral detail, the upper rim also having a hand gilded finish. The lid is circular with a gilded mazarine ground colour having a dragon atop.
This is a rare item about 200 years old and one of Mason's highly decorative and distinctive pieces which are so difficult to find today.
The piece is unmarked but definitely made by Mason's Ironstone.

Masons Ironstone Bottle Vase in Chinese Dragon Pattern very rare, circa 1820
By Mason's Ironstone
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very rare ironstone vase, in the Chinese style, all hand painted in the coloured dragon pattern, made by the Mason's factory in the early 19th century.
Both the vase shape and the pattern are very rare.
The vase has a bottle shape with a fairly tall neck, having two dolphin head handles, with attached loops.
(NOTES ON SHAPE
This vase style is a copy of a much earlier Chinese bronze vase shape produced in the Ming, Hongwu period of 1368 - 1398, which had similar decorative animal head side handles with loops. ( See the book Chinese Ceramics by He Li, page 216, published by Thames & Hudson. ).
Also On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 204;
The square handles and rings illustrate the metal origins of the shape of the vase. Similar examples have been excavated in Chinese tombs dating to the fifteenth and sixteenth century, suggesting that the shape was particularly popular at that time.)
This vase is beautifully hand decorated in a more complex variant of the Coloured Chinese Dragon pattern, with strong coloured enamels depicting a green dragon on one side and a pink dragon...
