Richard Haining, STACKED "Out of Many" Vessel, AVAILABLE
About the Item
This STACKED Vessel is made from a mixture of Walnut, Maple, and Mahogany.
This piece, with it's unassuming form, was crafted from a variety of salvaged woods, each with its unique coloration and grain patterning. The gently shaped form, and its honed surface possesses a warmth and openness, inviting touch and connection. The distinct yet seamlessly joined wood species represent diverse roots coming together—an embodiment of unity, where home is not found in perfection, but in the harmony of differences. The natural tones and patterns speak to the idea that home is not a place of uniformity, but a space where all things, in their imperfections, belong.
Richard’s work is driven by the concept of renewal—transforming salvaged materials into functional & decorative art that embodies beauty, craftsmanship, & environmental mindfulness. As an artist, he’s dedicated to this intersection—working exclusively with wood salvaged from from around NYC; from offcuts & scraps from local workshops to discarded old-growth lumber from prewar buildings. Richard, reimagines these materials, destined for landfills, is an act of renewal honoring the material’s history & its potential for a new life. These materials are found in various shapes & conditions, requiring significant time to transform it into something consistent and usable. Then, piece by individual piece, layer upon layer, he guides the wood into the desired shape, something akin to a coiled ceramic pot. Once constructed, he refines the surfaces by hand, revealing imperfections: mineral stains, contrasting heartwood and sapwood, knots, century-old nail holes—marks of the wood’s history.
By juxtaposing repurposed ‘low-value’ materials with ‘high-art’ forms, Richard invites viewers to reconsider what is truly valuable. Ultimately, he hopes his work sparks a conversation about sustainability, showing that art, craftsmanship, & environmental responsibility can coexist—and that beauty can emerge from the most unexpected places.

Richard Haining
Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
