About the Item

A very stylish Art Deco Belgian art pottery crested jug by renowned and acclaimed potter Roger Guérin (Belgian, 1896-1954) and dating from around 1930. Roger Guérin (1896-1954) was a Belgian potter from the village of Bouffioulx near Charleroi and was one of the most important ceramicists from this area. He started his own workshop in 1918 with his son Jules Guerin taking over in about 1945. Dating seems to be a problem, generally accepted that incised "R Guerin" marks are earlier with simple Guerin signatures, some impressed, are after c1925. Roger appears to have exhibited his pots Paris during the 1930's and he was a member of the Socieate des Gres d'art de Bouffioulx. This fine example of Roger Guérin’s work has an almost “studio” ceramic style to it. The stoneware jug stands on a flat unglazed foot rim with a skirted edge and a pinched lower body widening to large round upper body with a narrow short, raised rim with a small, shaped pouring spout. A thick grooved loop pouring handle is applied to the side. The jug has an oval crest applied in relief to the front within a loop edge surround. The body of the jug is decorated in mottled blue glazes with mottled grey glazes to the handle and lighter blue glazes to the top rim. The crest has a brown salt glazed finish as is also applied to the inner base which has an incised Guérin signature mark with initials LB and the number 85. A fine display piece. Provenance: acquired in the UK Art Market. In good condition.
