Satsuma Earthenware Vases, Hand-Painted Polychrome, Japan, Set of 2

About the Item

These charming round vases are crafted from yellowish earthenware and feature a polychrome, hand-painted design with ornate designs and figurative pieces with rich, raised gold embellishments. Each vase depicts two men in beautifully patterned clothing, with a mountain landscape and a stylized Japanese rising sun on the back. The vases, adorned with gilt rims, gilded handles at the shoulder, and three ball feet, are nearly identical but display slight variations due to their hand-painted nature. Without stamps or signatures, dating these Satsuma ware vases is challenging, but their finely crackled glaze and bodies which do not "ring" (as opposed to porcelain) when tapped, suggest they are authentic earthenware vases and older, possibly pre-1870. ABOUT SATSUMA WARE Satsuma ware, a yellowish earthenware with intricate decorations of Japanese figures, landscapes, or dragons, was designed in the mid-19th century for Western markets. Initially centered in Satsuma, production expanded to cities like Kyoto and Tokyo. By 1800, brocade (nishikide) decoration, including delicate iron-red, blue, green, and gilding, became popular. Influenced by Kyoto pottery and the Kanō school, Satsuma pieces featured floral patterns and negative space. To appeal to foreign tastes, producers adapted the style, adding dense, ornate designs and figurative pieces with rich, raised gold embellishments.
