About the Item

Sculptural rectangular glass vase features striking, jewel-like deep orange glass color and lightly textured surfaces that add detail and visual interest to a minimally shaped piece. The vase has a prominent pontil mark and small controlled air bubble inclusion throughout the glass that emphasize the hand-blown nature of the piece, adding an organic element to it. The vase is not signed; it has significant similarities to a series of rectangular glass vases seen in Lindshammar 1960s catalogue. The vases in the series display variations in texture, from light to very prominent, as well as in size and color. Lindshammar vase would be signed by a sticker, letting us to believe that this vase is probably one of their vases that is missing the manufacturer sticker label. While Blenko made vases in the same style, the orange color used for this vase is not consistent with Blenko glass colors, making it less likely that the vase was created by Blenko despite the noticeable shape similarities. Lindshammar glass was founded in 1905 in the town of Lindshammar, Sweden; Christer Sjögren (b. 1926) was designing for the company from 1963, introducing a freer approach to glass design that presaged the studio glass movement. In 1965 he designed a series of vases with irregular ribbed and grainy textures created by blowing the glass into wooden or granite moulds, and some brick sculptures made from irregular stacks of solid glass blocks.
