About the Item

Set of 2 vintage West German pottery vases features molded Amsterdam decor, often referred to as Onion, and semi-matte textured Fat Lava glaze in red and orange palette. Amsterdam, presented in 1972, is characterized by the parallel vertical bands of abstract geometric motifs resembling tulip bulbs. The characteristic Fat Lava glaze, with its textured appearance, flows around the molded decor elements, creating a tone-on-tone color variations and adding subtle texture to balance a strong relef decor of the pieces. Both vases are marked on the bottoms with W. GERMANY and the decor and size numbers, 285-23 and 285-15. The larger vase is decorated in warm coral orange glaze, and the smaller vase - in bright tomato red glaze, providing visual interest within the set. Bright, cheerful red glazes can serve as an unexpected pop of red in an interior, or to blend in with more colorful decoration schemes. In late 1960s and 1970s Scheurich ceramics were characterized by organic color schemes, often brown or green, with molded decors inspired by different patterns from nature, such as Amsterdam, resembling tulip bulbs, Koralle, that looks like knots in the wood, Foligno, incorporating bands of stylized flowers, and Jura, that look like fossils, or inspired by ancient cultures, such as Inca. Majority of the forms and decors were created by Heinz Siery, who joined Scheurich in 1955. Sculptural Mid Century Modern vases with Organic Modern style influence, distinguished with elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence, will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Modernist, Transitional, Grand Millennial, Organic Modern, Japandi, Collected, or Contemporary. Smaller vase is 3.25" in diameter and 6" high.
